A harsh word from someone can really impact your confidence.

If the person criticizing your horsemanship doesn't have prior experience doing what they are advising, if they couldn't take the reins and demonstrate what they are telling you to do, then there is no need to take their words to heart.

Or, if they could ride your horse, but you wouldn't agree with their methods, then definitely walk away.

Just because someone gives you advice doesn't mean you have to take it!

Adopt a Beginner's Mindset

Have you ever noticed how children learn new things quickly?

How they aren’t afraid to try new things-even if they might not be “good” at it? They are willing to try, and willing to make mistakes.

Children are beginners at a lot of things. And beginners know that they don’t know, and are eager to learn. They are curious.

This eagerness to learn, the openness to new ideas, and willingness to try new things, is all part of the Beginner’s Mindset.

As we learn and start to know more about a topic, as we feel that we are no longer beginners, we tend to lose this natural curiosity.

We tend to think that we’ve learned it, and we know, and we start to do things that same way that we originally learned how to do them.

We stop questioning and asking “why.”

We might even stop being open-minded because we think that others expect us to know more, to be experts on a topic.

We get stuck in a rut.

I think that successful, gritty riders are the ones that embrace the beginner’s mindset.

They know that they are never done learning. That each horse has unique needs, and that each horse has something new to teach them.

When a previously tried and true technique doesn’t work, they ask why. They re-evaluate their methods. They ask questions, seek more knowledge, and change.

Frustration begins where knowledge ends.

So the next time that you find yourself frustrated along your horsemanship journey, stop and ask yourself “why?”

Look at the obstacle from a new perspective.

Ask a trusted trainer, friend or mentor for help.

Try something new.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.

Be Teachable. Think like a beginner.
