Essential Oil Tips
How do Essential Oils work?
Essential oils are the aromatic liquid within many plants that is extracted through steam distillation. Most commonly essential oils are used aromatically (fragrances) and topically.
When used aromatically, the molecules of the essential oil, what we recognize as the scent of the oil, interacts with our limbic system, or the emotional part of our brain.
It is a known fact that smells can trigger powerful memories and emotions. By using essential oils, you can promote and support positive emotions like calm, confidence, and courage.
Horses are also extremely sensitive to oils-a little goes a long way! Using a carrier oil when applying oils topically helps ensure that the essential oils applied are comfortable to the skin.
How to use Oils
Aromatically: Take off the lid of the bottle and put a few drops of oil on your palms. Rub your palms together, then cup over your mouth/nose and inhale. You can also cup your hands over your horse's muzzle so they can inhale the oil.
Topically: Apply a few drops to your pulse points-your wrists and behind your ears. Horses are very sensitive to oils-it is better to apply to their chest, poll, and down their spine, rather than applying directly to their nose.
Using Essential Oils Safely
Essential oils are potent and can often be more powerful than expected. Keep away from mucous membranes, eyes, ears and sensitive areas.
When trying a new oil, it is recommended patch test a small amount on your skin. If a reaction occurs, flush and dilute the area with a carrier oil such as olive oil, vegetable oil, etc., then wash away with soap and water.
If in doubt, consult with your physician or veterinarian before use.
