So you can start 2020 on the right hoof to transform your horsemanship dreams into reality!
Together, we're going to get gritty, turn our passion for horsemanship into practice, and persevere through the winter blahs. Come spring, you and your horse will be ready to go!
Are you gritty enough?
Starting Sunday, January 5th through Saturday, February 29th, the grittiest of horsemen and horsewomen commit to working with their horses at least three days a week-no matter what the weather.
This challenge is open to any rider, any discipline, any breed-this isn't a training challenge, but rather, an accountability and inspiration challenge.
The challenge is to work with your horse 3 days a week. You are responsible for tracking the hours that you spend with your horse-we are working on the honor system here. I highly encourage you to post photos every time you ride, and to be active in the Facebook group supporting each other!
Now, if you are in, I expect you to be IN. This means committing to work with your horse 3 days a week for the next 8 weeks.
No excuses-this means getting out there in the cold and snow, the rain and mud. You can do this!
Together, we're going to get gritty, turn our passion for horsemanship into practice, and persevere through the winter blahs. Come spring, you and your horse will be ready to go!
This challenge is more than just a place to track your rides-it is also a motivational mental toughness program!
Every day I will be posting in the Private Challenge Facebook Group.
I will be sharing inspirational coaching tips, mindfulness techniques, journaling prompts, mental skills, downloadable resources and more to help you develop the mental skills you need to be successful with your horse in 2020 and beyond.
Also during the challenge you are going to receive individualized support from myself and other gritty riders-many of last year's challenge participants said this was their favorite part!

I understand the challenges that come with winter-I live in Wisconsin!
And during the winter much of the work that I do with my horses is done outside. My family runs a herd of beef cattle, and when the snow gets too deep, the only way to get to where the cows are is on horseback!
If Breezy and I can do it, so can you!

I'll admit, the first few winters that I spent on the farm were really frustrating to me. I had been used to heated barns and big indoor arenas with perfect footing where I could keep riding all winter long.
I thought if I couldn't lope and work on spins and stops, that I just may as well turn my horse out for the winter and quit riding until April. And of course, then my horse was pretty fresh and unruly and I felt like I was waaay behind come show season! And honestly, I missed riding!
I knew I needed to keep riding throughout the winter. It was necessary not only for me to be able to make progress towards my goals, but also for my own mental well-being!

That is why I started the Winter Horsemanship Challenge in January 2019. And I learned a lot from this process! I learned that while I may not be able to work on maneuvers for the show pen due to the footing, that the miles I logged with my horse just walking in the snow kept him legged up and mentally fresh. It was a good change for him to spend a few months simply riding outside. And come spring when the snow melted and we were able to shift our focus to show pen maneuvers, my horse was ready.
Winter is a great time to ride and enjoy your horse. Take the pressure off and shift your focus to your connection and partnership with your horse. There is plenty that you can do with your horse-even basic groundwork in the barn aisle-and your winter work will definitely pay off come spring time!
